The first attempts to create a perfect material that was supposed to have functions other than those found in the environment date back to about 1 000 B.C. where ancient Mexicans processed rubber. The Olemo tribe is considered as the forerunners of plastics. The rubber they processed with different elasticities was used to make rubber soles or balls, among other things. The modification of rubber turned out to be a hit in terms of receiving a material of innovative properties: it does not corrode, is flexible and lightweight and can easily change the form, shape and colour. Over the years scientists were improving this process on the basis of more recent discoveries. As a result, polyethylene, polyvinyl chloride, PVC, PTFE and polyester were obtained. Then began large-scale work on obtaining even better properties and easier access to plastics. The very name of plastics comes from the Greek “plastikos” and the Latin “plasticus” meaning “mouldable”-which indicates its most distinctive characteristic.
